Hospital Experience
Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital offers a full range of medical and surgical cases and a wide breadth of learning opportunities. Perhaps more importantly, we have a supportive hospital leadership that places a high value on residency training. We have regular meetings to engage with our hospital leadership teams and review our shared goals. In working on hospital quality initiatives our residents also get to work with nursing, infection control and virtually every member of the interdisciplinary team at some point or another.
Our inpatient services admits patients from Rochester Academic Family Medicine and one day a week we are on-call for any new patients who do not have a primary care team. Our core faculty (along with a few volunteer community faculty members) round on the inpatient service. During your intern year you will spend four months as a member of this team. We also work closely with a group of private family medicine physicians who admit patients to the hospital. Our interns will be assigned a variety of patients from RAFM and the private attending service. The day-to-day experience is modified annually based on resident feedback but the general structure is outlined below:
Day Shift (6:45am-7pm)

6:45am sign-out (new admissions distributed or reassigned to interns)

7am-9am Work Time/Rounds with Private Attendings

9am Safety Huddle for faculty and members of the team

Safety Huddle is a multidisciplinary hospital meeting that reviews any events that affected patients and our team brings an important perspective to the table.

9:15am-12:00pm Table/Floor Rounds

In the morning, a resident team member should attend Multidisciplinary Rounds (MDR). This is typically at 11am and involves a review of any potential discharges for the day.

1pm-4:30pm Work Time/New Admissions/Rounds with Private Attendings

3:00pm-4pm Teaching/Sign Out with Faculty Attending
