Community Involvement

Founded in 2012, Street Medicine Detroit has been an impactful organization at the WSU School of Medicine. Our program has had regular involvement with SMD since 2020 and faculty and residents attend street runs with the medical students monthly. We provide resources, medical care and basic necessities to Detroit's homeless population as well as support the organization in its continued growth and development.

Residents in our Urban Track have this experience built into their curriculum during their training. They begin by going on street runs with our faculty members in their PGY1 and PGY2 and in their PGY3 will have a month dedicated primarily to Street Medicine at which time they serve as the physician champion.

Residents in our traditional track can elect to participate in Street Medicine throughout their training and many have and truly enjoyed this unique experience.

Outside of our popular work with Street Medicine, our residents are constantly involved in our communities. Whether it be providing blood pressure screening, diabetes screening, educational talks and even story time to local childrenwe are there! We pride ourselves in being fully ingrained in our communities whether it be working on a mobile health unit providing preventative measures to line-workers in Detroit, being the sideline doc at the Michigan Senior Olympics or providing home visits our residents are fully present in Metro-Detroit.
