Endowments, Awards, and Scholarships
The Wayne State University Department of Family Medicine and Public Heath Sciences wishes to thank all of the donors who help to support the Medical Student Education Program, the Family Medicine Residency and Transitional Year Residency Programs, and the Master of Public Health Program.
Medical Student Education Program
Bruce Carl, M.D. Endowed Scholarship
The Bruce Carl, M.D. Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who is in good academic standing and demonstrates financial need. Award recipients are recognized each year at the School of Medicine's Match Day event and in the commencement program.
John R. Manis, M.D. and Arpie Manis Endowed Scholarship
The John R. Manis, M.D. and Arpie Manis Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who is in good academic standing, demonstrates financial need, and has matched to Family Practice. Recipients are recognized each year at the School of Medicine's Match Day and in the commencement program.
Medical Student Specializing in Family Medicine Award
The Medical Student Specializing in Family Medicine Award is awarded annually to a graduating senior who is in good academic standing. The award applicant must exhibit leadership and commitment to the field of Family Medicine through volunteerism or clinical work. Applicants who exhibit outstanding scholastic achievement are given preference.
Frederick Maynard, M.D. and Mrs. Ruth Maynard Endowed Scholarship
The Frederick Maynard, M.D. and Mrs. Ruth Maynard Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who is in good academic standing, demonstrates financial need, and has chosen to pursue Family Medicine and will be continuing training in the Family Medicine Residency Program. The award recipient must have excelled both clinically and academically in the field.
George Mogill, M.D. Endowed Award for Family Medicine
The George Mogill, M.D. Endowed Award for Family Medicine is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has matched into a Family Medicine residency and is committed to a career in Family Medicine. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, their history of volunteerism and/or leadership, and a demonstrated compassion in the field of Family Medicine.
Dale L. Williams, M.D. Endowed Award in Family Medicine
The Dale L. Williams, M.D. Endowed Award in Family Medicine is awarded annually to a graduating senior who demonstrates financial need and has chosen to continue their training in a family medicine residency program. The award is announced each year on Match Day and is presented at commencement.
Rhoades Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Family Medicine
The Rhoades Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Family Medicine is awarded to assist fourth year medical students who have matched into a family medicine residency program, with special attention given to students originally from Wayne County, Michigan.
Family Medicine Endowed Direction Fund for Medical Students
The Family Medicine Endowed Direction Fund for Medical Students' purpose is to support activities in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. The chairperson of the Department will use the beneficiary account, at their discretion, to build medical student awareness of Family Medicine as a medical specialty.

Family Medicine Residency and Transitional Year Residency Programs
The Bonnie Simmons-Sherr, M.D. Award for Residents
The Bonnie Simmons-Sherr, M.D. Award for Residents in the Family Medicine Residency Program was created to encourage graduating residents from the Wayne State University Family Medicine Residency Program to remain and practice in underserved communities. Residents must be in good standing in residency, demonstrate excellence in academic, scholarly, and clinical work, possess a signed employment contract or proof of an ambulatory, continuity, clinical practice location at the time of award selection, and upon graduation, the selected resident will perform their clinical practice in a designated Health Profession Shortage Area in the State of Michigan.
Clair Knighten-Ward Family Medicine Excellence Award
The Clair Knighten-Ward Family Medicine Excellence Award is given to a third year family medicine resident at Wayne State University who best exemplifies the spirit of enthusiasm for medicine, mankind, and faith so practiced by Dr. Knighten-Ward.
Master of Public Health Program
MPH Student Grant Award
The MPH Student Grant Award provides funds for student scholarly activities, including but not limited to, professional conference registration and travel and poster printing.
The John B. Waller, Jr and Menthele (Mikki) Waller Endowed Scholarship
The John B. Waller Jr and Menthele (Mikki) Waller Endowed Scholarship provides tuition support to a Master of Public Health student. The recipient must demonstrate high scholastic achievement, financial need, and promote excellence and dedication to the practice of public health.
