Behavioral Sciences Faculty Present at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Society of Behavioral Medicine

The 43rd Annual Meeting of the Society of Behavioral Medicine was held April 6-9, 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland. Representing the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences were April Idalski Carcone, PhD, and Elizabeth Towner, PhD. Dr. Carcone presented findings from her intervention refinement efforts as part of her National Institutes of Health research project, Improving Diabetes Health in Emerging Adulthood (IDEA) through an Autonomy Support Intervention (R01DK116901) as part of the "eHealth Interventions for Reaching Emerging Adults with Type 1 Diabetes in their Daily Context" symposium. The symposium was recognized by the SBM Diabetes Special Interest Group and received their innovation award. Dr. Towner presented findings from two projects. The first was the outcomes of her partnership with Brilliant Detroit and the Detroit Community COVID Crushers (PCORI # EAIN-00149; #DMCF 2021-13631) that adapted Boot Camp Translation methodology for rapid and virtual implementation. In this project, the Detroit Community COVID Crushers developed iterative health campaigns to share evidence-based information about COVID-19 with the community. This presentation received a Citation Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Towner’s second presentation was a poster that detailed outcomes of a collaboration with Alyssa Beavers, PhD (Department of Nutrition & Food Sciences) to develop a system for coding food receipt data to align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and to be used irrespective of where foods are purchased (Targeted Research Award, Society of Pediatric Psychology).
