Biography

Jinping Xu, MD, MS, FAAFP is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences, Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Xu first joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 2001 after completing her Family Medicine residency training at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received a master’s of science degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan in 2005. She a member of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Population Studies and Prevention Program. Since 2017, Dr. Xu has served as the director of MetroNet, a primary care practice-based research network in metropolitan Detroit with goals of supporting evidence-based primary care and reducing racial disparities in health outcomes. Dr. Xu was promoted to professor in 2017, interim department chair in February 2021 and became permanent chair in February 2023.

As an accomplished physician-scientist, Dr. Xu has been continuously funded for more than 15 years by various funding agencies including federal and state government, American Cancer Society, state and local foundations. She is widely published, and her research interests include primary care, cancer control and prevention, and helping patients make more informed decisions through patients and community engagement efforts.

A board-certified family physician, Dr. Xu sees patients at Wayne Health Family Medicine Center at Troy location. She teaches medical students and residents in an ambulatory setting as well as mentors many of them on their scholarship projects, some of them earning top research awards in statewide research competitions. Dr. Xu also mentors numerous junior faculty within and outside the university.
