WSU’s 9th Annual Research Day Celebrates Student Innovation and Public Health Leadership

The Department’s 9th Annual Research Day event was held on the WSU campus at the Integrative Biosciences Center on April 17, 2025. The event spotlighted cutting-edge research and scholarship from departmental faculty and students, including residents, medical students and Master of Public Health students. Poster presentations addressed topics such as developing community outreach curricula to be used in family medicine residency training, quality assurance programs to help train family medicine residents to provide nutrition counseling, assessing neighborhood quality using Google Street View, the use of eHealth approaches to improve diabetes management, and many more.

Three oral presentations received awards for best student presentations and were entitled “Neighborhood Disorder and Type 1 Diabetes Management in Emerging Adults”, “Optimizing Community Engagement: Evaluation of a 3-Part Workshop for Academic Researchers and Community Members” and “Improving Rates of Mammogram Completion at Rochester Academic Family Medicine”.

The keynote address was given by Renée Branch Canady, Ph.D., who is Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Public Health Institute and a national thought leader in the areas of health inequities and disparities, cultural competence, and social justice.
