PHSO Event: Breastfeeding Documentary with JOB Lactation Foundation

On January 17, 2025, the Public Health Student Organization (PHSO), the Wayne State University Master of Public Health (WSU MPH) Practicum team, and the Joys of Breastfeeding (J.O.B) Lactation Foundation LLC hosted a preview screening of the documentary "Joys of Breastfeeding," created by Micia J. Eddins, a Wayne State University alumna and the founder and CEO of the J.O.B Lactation Foundation LLC. Following the viewing, the audience and student facilitators engaged with discussion questions to our esteemed panelists, who included Micia Eddins, Michigan State Senator Erika Geiss, Bomani Gray of the MetroDetroit Fatherhood Policy Initiative Group, and the Founding Executive Director of Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA), Kiddada Green. Through the documentary and panel, these professionals provided their insights and advice to current MPH students about the topic of breastfeeding. This insightful discussion allowed us to begin to highlight the importance of breaking down barriers and reducing the stigma surrounding breastfeeding. Their experiences, from lactation consultation to advocating for health policy, fill our understanding with active and accountable measures to change the story of breastfeeding to one that allows for mothers and babies to engage openly in a vital practice.
There were several key takeaways from this event. Breastfeeding is not a well-discussed topic, so we must expand our knowledge and advocate for others. Despite breastfeeding being healthy for the baby and mother, a lack of knowledge and misinformation about breastfeeding contributes to the decision of breastfeeding. Cultural beliefs discouraging breastfeeding can create embarrassment. Furthermore, stigmas and shame around breastfeeding have created inequities in racialized populations. Additional challenges include limited support from family and friends, inadequate maternity leave policies, and financial barriers to affordable healthcare and lactation support. To normalize breastfeeding and combat the stigma, we need to educate, build a supportive environment, and create policies that empower mothers while respecting individual choices. For example, fathers or partners can be active supporters during breastfeeding. Lactation consultants help support families while breastfeeding, and doulas, who help advocate for mothers, are a needed support in the community.
Students took home so much more because of the wealth of knowledge our honorable panelists shared, so thank you. We are so appreciative because this would not have been possible without everyone involved. We would like to provide a special thank you to the J.O.B Lactation, our student facilitators, our MPH practicum team, and PHSO leadership for organizing this spectacular event, including food and refreshments. Our MPH program is enriched by opportunities like these that enhance our students’ perspectives and knowledge around maternal and infant health.
