Celebrating the Career of Dr. Juliann Binienda

In December our department came together to celebrate the retirement and Emeritus status of Dr. Juliann Binienda, a distinguished faculty member, respected division leader, nationally recognized educator, and cherished colleague. 

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Binienda demonstrated consistent excellence as an educator and scholar. She received numerous institutional and national teaching awards and developed a respected record of scholarship, including publications and national presentations. She served as principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple grants, directed key courses, and played an important role in advancing both the academic and clinical missions of the department.

Her commitment remained steady through her final year, during which she continued teaching, publishing, presenting nationally, and contributing to program evaluation efforts. Notably, she served for many years as evaluator for the MI-AHEC program. Her willingness to step forward whenever the department needed her reflects the depth of her commitment and her unwavering sense of responsibility to Wayne State and the department.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. Binienda contributed meaningfully to departmental development and alumni engagement. She has given back to the department not only through mentorship and leadership, but also through philanthropy, personally contributing through the School’s development office to invest in its future. She was also instrumental in establishing the MPH alumni branch within the School of Medicine alumni office, strengthening alumni engagement and building lasting support for the MPH program.

Although she is retiring from her formal faculty role, Dr. Binienda will continue to offer guidance as the department moves forward with ongoing strategic and rebranding initiatives. Her experience and perspective will remain valuable resources. As we celebrate her retirement and Emeritus status, we extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Binienda for her scholarship, mentorship, generosity, and steadfast commitment to the university Her influence will continue to shape our department for years to come.
